Michael J. Levitt is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Stone Tower Capital LLC. Mr. Levitt founded Stone Tower in 2001 as an alternative investment management firm focused on non-investment grade corporate credit and structured credit. Stone Tower currently manages in excess of $38 billion of assets.
Prior to forming Stone Tower, Mr. Levitt was a partner with the private equity firm Hicks, Muse, Tate and Furst Inc. Mr. Levitt's responsibilities included: (i) originating, structuring and overseeing fund investments, principally in the media and consumer products industries, and (ii) managing the Firm's relationships with investment and commercial banking firms worldwide. Mr. Levitt served on the investment committees of all the firm's funds.
Prior to joining Hicks Muse, Mr. Levitt served as a Managing Director and the Co Head of Investment Banking at Smith Barney. While at Smith Barney, Mr. Levitt, in addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the Investment Banking Division, built and supervised: (i) mergers and acquisitions; (ii) leveraged finance; and (iii) the private equity, media, retailing, and lodging and gaming industry specialty groups. Prior thereto, Mr. Levitt was a Managing Director with Morgan Stanley & Co. He was responsible for the firm's corporate finance, merger and acquisition and leveraged finance activities with private equity firms and non-investment grade companies.
Mr. Levitt has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York for the past dozen years. Mr. Levitt served as Chairman of the Board from 1996 through 2000. In addition, Mr. Levitt served on the Board of the Directors of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. He is also a member of the Board of the Hope and Heroes Children's Cancer Fund, and a member of the Board of the New York Police & Fire Widow's & Children's Benefit Fund, Inc.
Mr. Levitt received his undergraduate and Juris Doctor Degrees from the University of Michigan. He serves on the University of Michigan Ross School Of Business Visiting Committee and on the University of Michigan Endowment Investment Committee. He is also a Trustee for the Cook Trust.
